Ideology

 Question Time immigration debate

1) From this clip some of the examples of binary opposition are: The elite vs working class,  immigration being a problem vs immigrants being exploited etc.

2) Russel Brands ideology seems to be about the corrupt economic elite exploiting the country and taking advantage of the disabled and immigrants causing the country to appear to be running out of resources. Nigel Farage believes that this country has started to become overcrowded due to immigrants. This has caused the general quality of life for average citizens to decrease.

Media magazine reading

1) Those in power control resources throughout the series but the lines between powerful and powerless eventually become blurred.

2) The capitalist view presented throughout Hunger games seems to be about the world being led by a dictator that uses fear to stifle hope and to control the masses so that they can keep doing what he wants for his own entertainment. This dictator doesn't seem to care about those beneath him and values his own views above others.

3) The Hunger Games presents the media as a powerful weapon that can be used to control the worlds perspective. In the films both sides manipulate the media to there bidding with Katniss using it as a way to rebel and Capitol using it as a way to control.

Understanding Ideology

1) Our responses and identity as a whole is mostly shaped by our cultures dominant ideology.

2) The four accepted beliefs in western societies are:

  • Good should overcome evil
  • Law is better then disorder.
  • Pleasure is a goal in life
  • People should work hard for their money
3) Gramsci's theory of hegemony shows us how those in power manipulate our cultures ideology to control us as a people. This allows them to get people to accept certain beliefs as natural tricking people into consenting to these beliefs.

4) Louise Althusser believes there's two key ways of controlling the publics ideology: Repressive state control- Using major societal institutions (e.g. police, army court, etc) who can repress people through violence, the law and fear. Ideological state apparatuses (Church, the media, education etc) dominate our viewpoints implicitly through common sense and social norms to get society to accept it.

5) I do believe that we are partly controlled by the media being run in the best interests of the elite as although a lot of our ideologies that have been built up from our own culture definitely benefits the elite more then it does others. However I cant fully agree with everyone being mindless drones that only serve the rich since there's always people who don't adhere to these unspoken rules society has made due to everyone just simply not being that passive.
