Advertising: Persuasive Techniques Marmite

 1) John Burger in "Ways of seeing" stated that advertising offers us an improved version of ourselves and also that all publicity works on anxiety. 2) Referencing is when a person knowingly or subconsciously refer to lifestyles represented to us. This could be linked to some persuasive techniques like inadequacy marketing where advertisers exploit peoples insecurities to give them a further incentive to buy there products. 3) Marmite was created by a German scientist in the 19th century who discovered brewers yeast could be concentrated.  4) Currently Unilever owns the Marmite brand . 5) Marmite has used intertextuality by featuring other media products (e.g. Zippy from rainbow) in there advertisements to gain attraction. This grants the audience a feeling of gratification if they recognise one of the media products referenced. 6) Popular culture is the beliefs, consumption patterns and mannerisms of the mass majority of people while high culture is to do with the preference

Identity in the online age/Collective identity

1)  Who are You: We all construct an image of what we want to be seen as. I think therefore I am: Our identity used to be easier to define with it usually revolving around our class, religion, gender and predetermined roles. From citizen to consumer: We shouldn't be behaving as active citizens but passive consumers The rise of the individual: The notion of the individualism took hold and people wanted to express there own uniqueness. Branding and lifestyle: Advertisers sell the personality rather than the product so people choose what brand they can associate with their own self image.   Question Time immigration debate 1) From this clip some of the examples of binary opposition are: The elite vs working class,  immigration being a problem vs immigrants being exploited etc. 2) Russel Brands ideology seems to be about the corrupt economic elite exploiting the country and taking advantage of the disabled and immigrants causing the country to appear to be running out of resources. Nigel Farage believes that this country has started to become overcrowded due to immigrants. This has caused the general quality of life for average citizens to decrease.
