Introduction to representation

 1) Representation is an important concept as it allows media to be re-presented through a different perspective and interpreted from a new lens.

2) The Kate Middleton example shows how the images if put in a certain order can create and fit the editors narrative. They can create this meaning through its re-presentation.

3) When analysing representation producers consider:

  • The target audiences expectations
  • Limitations from genre codes
  • Institutional remit.
  • The narrative they wish to create.
Representations are the cumulative effect of a number of media language choices. Naturalisation of ideas actually acts to hide there ideology from view as they attempt to make it common sense so we don't recognise it or overthink it.

4) Stuart Halls theory of preferred and oppositional readings fits into representation as the audience may accept certain ideologies that they're presented with and agree on its outlook or they might reject this media text and its meaning despite understanding what the producer intended.

5) With the rise of new media people are able to construct there own representations through a broad amount of platforms that give consumers these opportunities to show there own re-presentations. We construct ideas of our daily lives through social media and through this we can tell what characteristics and type of identity a person adopts.

6) The example given in the extract for how national identity is represented in Britain was the Queen. In old media this represented a type of "Englishness" through symbolic references and what the queen means to British culture.

7) The dominant representations in the Luther clip is that he seems be a respectable individual that's good at his job but was fired in the past due to lax lifestyle. This is evident that despite getting fired because of that his co-workers still welcome him back with respect for his work and dedication.
An alternative explanation for the representation of the clip is that the main character doesn't take his life seriously and takes the second opportunity of his job back for granted.

8) Luthor uses the dominant representations of police officers as lazy and incompetent by making them ask for the main characters services to help them. This reinforces this idea while also making the main character seem more important. This is also an example of Perkins theory on stereotypes being partly true as people nowadays view the police in this light because of there recent actions in terms of police brutality. Luther also reduces the police departments complexity by making all of the police officers ignorant and blind.
