Media Regulation MIGRAIN

 1) Regulation are rules enforced onto media so that organisations and businesses cant operate in there own sectors to there devices. These rules attempt to make them operate fairly. There are several regulatory that exist to monitor the way industries work.

2)OFCOM (Office of communication) is responsible for broadcasting of media (TV and radio).

3) I believe the 3 most important sections of OFCOM's broadcasting code is

  • Fairness: as I believe that broadcasters should treat individuals and the industry in this way so that we aren't deceived.
  • Protecting under 18s: To ensure that the youth aren't influenced wrongly by the media.
  • Harm and offense: Nobody should be condoning horrific acts of violence to people
4) I dont agree with OFCOM that channel 4 was wrong to broadcast Wolverine at 6:55 as I believe the film was mostly all flash and no substance. The violence within the film was mostly only impressionistic but had some scenes graphic content.

5) 5 sections from the old press complaints commissions code:
  1. Accuracy
  2. Intrusion into grief and shock
  3. Harassment
  4. Discrimination
  5. Privacy
6) The press complaints commissions code was under scrutiny due to its lack of punishment when a person breached any of the rules-Newspapers apparently seemed to go against the rules frequently. All the victims could look forward to were to get a half baked apology.

7) The Leveson inquiry was a judicial public inquiry into the culture practices and ethical nature of the British press. This was set up after there was a news international phone scandal.

8) The press complaints commission was closed at 2012 and was replaced with IPSO (Independent Press Standards Organisation.)

9) I believe the press should be regulated due to its ability to control the information the public receives which can be very dangerous if gone unregulated as its easy to spread mis-information.

10) The internet is so difficult to regulate due to how wide its influence and expansion has gotten. To regulate a platform or something that everyone uses is almost impossible due to the fact that there will almost always be a gap or a way to get past a rule or restriction. Nobody can monitor everything that goes on in something so expansive.
