Public Service Broadcasting

 OFCOM

1) TV viewing is changing as people have begun viewing content from different platforms/devices.

3) The report suggests that viewers are satisfied with PSB as it says 78% of people claim to be happy with its service. 75% of people agreed that the PSB news channels are trustworthy, 77% of people believed that PSB programmes helped them to understand the world around them better, 75% of people said that PSB channels provided good quality news about there area.

Goldsmiths

1) The report explains that technology has made content from TV available on demand whenever or wherever.

2)The principles that need to be reinforced are:

  1. Content should be guaranteed prominence on electronic programme guides.
  2. Retransmission fees should be paid by pay TV platforms to public service television operators.
  3. OFCOM should supplement its occasional reviews of public service broadcasting with a regular qualitative audit to make sure audiences are served high quality programmes.
  4. OFCOM should continue to monitor the independent production sector and take action where necessary.
3)The report states that the BBC is the most important part of television ecology but it hurts its competitors.

4) According to the report the BBC should be funded by a tiered platform model.

5) Channel 4 occupies a critical place in the public service ecology

6) Channel 4 should not be privatised and should continue to innovate and experiment across platforms

7) The report believes that the growing contribution to a digital ecology made by cultural institutions should be boosted by a specific public invention.

My opinion

1) I believe that the BBC shouldn't retain its position as the UK's PSB as I believe it may be time for more competitors to take the BBC's spot so we get an increase in variety of opinions and beliefs.

2)In the 21st century digital world i believe there isn't a big future for the BBC when people nowadays rarely even use it.

3) I believe the BBC should find an alternative way to fund itself like allowing only people who use the BBC's services to pay for the license fee.
