Paul Gilroy- Diasporic identity

 1) Gilroy suggests that racial identities are historically constructed- formed by colonization, slavery, nationalist philosophies and consumer capitalism.

2) Gilroy explains that " Race is not the eternal cause of racism but is its complex, unstable product. Neither race nor racism is the exclusive property of the minorities who are there primary victims.

3) Ethnic absolutism is a line of thinking which sees humans are part of different ethnic compartments with race as the base of human differentiation.

4) Diaspora means the scattering of people and a diaspora is generally considered to exist within a small group in scattered numbers across continents. Identities of individuals within a diaspora are formed over time, as a result of historical social and cultural relationships within the group and other groups.

5) The common/dominant representation of black Britons was "an external and estranged from the imagined community that is the nation."

6) Gilroy believes that diaspora can challenge national ideologies and one of the negative effects of this is that these identities can become trapped within a nation ideology; diasporic cultural ideologies and practises exist within a national ideology based upon its social, economic and cultural integrations.

7) Diasporic communities might use media to stay connected their cultural identity by interacting with more media from that particular community (E.g. Looking at the communities recent events through the news.). They may also use social media to interact with people who are within they're community to feel more at peace with they're identity.

8) The reason that Gilroy believes that racism is important in diasporic identity as the modern world was built upon a normalised view on slavery. He argues that the figure of the black slave provided enlightened thinkers and philosophers an insight into concepts of property rights, consciousness and arts.

9) Double consciousness are two perspectives faced by African Americans which are: Seeing it from a black mans perspective and seeing it from the American states perspectives.

10) The trailer from hidden figures attempts to challenge the double consciousness as it tries to represent the black community as a group of smart and independent people trying to oppose against the stereotypes presented by the American state.
