Paper 1 Learner response
1) Q1.
- Add further detail to the answers using more media terminology to describe the poster. E.g. talk about how the decision to omit the eyes as a way to focus on the mouth (A singers way to express themselves) which is both meaningful and unconventional.
- Suggest why the title was partially obscured using media theories as a basis
- The presentation of the artist (Makeup lipstick etc) and the gendered readings of this.
Q2.
- Provide a balanced arguement when answering the question. Not enough detail on one side.
- Letter to the free relates to social issues within American society even the title itself makes people question whether they are truly "free"
- Letter to the free also makes use of its message through its colour palate being mostly black and white throughout the video
Q3.
- Requires further detail and knowledge on the narrative theories (Todorrov, Levi-strauss etc)
Q4.
- Paragraphs need further depth and planning to it. Timing became a problem.
- Discuss Butlers ideas of gender in Butler with more detail- Both the actors are a subversion of expectations. (She wasn't objectified or placed in a relationship with the male actor and the male actor is also gay)
- Score hair cream would have different reactions depending on which generation views the advert. Supports the idea that gender is a performance (Further backed up by they're costumes.)

- Need to manage my time better in the tests. Very rushed and needs further detail on the answer.
Q7)
- Explain what reading are and how audiences reacted to WOTW
- Revise WOTW in more depth- The purpose of the radio broadcast was both to entertain and make people scared (shown through its conventions) but the author definitely didnt expect the reading to be this extreme and result in what happened.
- Theres also the need to take note of the fact that not everyone reacted the same way.
3) Question 4 plan
- Explain Judith Butlers theory of how gender is a performance
- Paragraph of how this relates to score hair cream- It supports this idea a lot for a list of reasons
- Paragraph on Maybeline and how it relates to this theory- Goes against traditional gender norms.
- Conclusion- Both the media texts would be reacted completely differently depending on the generation you showed it to. Audiences back then were used to this performance.
4) Things im gonna revise: Judith Butler, Narrative theories, WOTW, Newsbeat and media terminology.
